Why do some sociologist think that capitalism and socialism are converging?

Currently the US has utilized capitalism where businesses have been owned privately without government interference (bailouts). Now Congress has been writing bailout plan after bailout plan. There is even talk about the government purchasing large companies like AIG--this is socialism.
